" What does one do with moose after one hunts it? "

Moose is quite good.Something like beef, but well " Gamier ".

Best to hunt young ones, less than two years old, as the meat is very tender then,The older the moose, the tuffer usually.

Many come here to hunt as trophies ( big antler racks ), but the meat is donated if the hunter does not want it.

Don't hunt anymore myself.Always used a .308 Winchester and some buddies used 30-30's.The .308 was more accurate, but the 30-30 could bring a larger one down faster.

Butcher them the same as you would beef, and prepare pretty much the same way.

Don't tell me you never had a moose burger?

I'm shocked! Shocked I tell ya.<G>

<<OT - What does one do with moose after one hunts it? Are they edible? If so, do they taste good?>>

I've had moose cooked on the grill and it was quite good. Moose, elk and deer have no marbling in the meat so you have to guard against the meat drying out.

One time while fishing I saw a moose being quartered to be hauled out. These guys used a chainsaw with vegetable used to oil the bar and chain. Slick.

My father once killed an elk, and fried it like they fry turkeys in Louisiana, in a gigantic pot full of oil, and I thought that was probably not the best way to cook it, but I was pregnant then and rather queasy. The fact that he got used oil from a donut shop did not help. Beignet shop, actually, which are sort of like donuts.

ROFL
That is a great story and I pray to God you are kidding.

Do it up like beef ( same cuts) and its great tasting but yes it is a stronger gamier flavour than beef but very good. You make steaks, stewing meat, roasts, hamburger etc. etc. from it. It will yield about 400 lbs. of final packaged meat from the butcher. We find that a 30-30 is a little light. Need more umphh than that usually but at close quarters and well placed shots, it will do the job. As opposed to KCFOS i have never seen anyone hunt just for a rack ( antlers) and surrender the meat. That conduct would not be understood in our area and frowned upon. The meat is cherished. I suspect they have more big game, out of area hunters where he comes from.
