I've got a record of being only about 40% correct, so I generally avoid them.

Yup. It's that 60% wrong that kills you. Even if you are right about the earnings you can't predict how the market will react to them primarily because most of the time the action occurs in the BS after hours market. I can't tell you how many times I've pledged to myself to not hold any positions through an earnings announcement.
