But the "keep up containment" arguments have about that them a structure of historical experience

I don't think they do when they fail even to acknowledge that containment is breaking down badly; there are after all certain facts on the ground that close observers agree on but most of the containment pundits prefer to just ignore.

As for the imputation that whatever Bush says is automatically disbelieved, I find that very widely assumed

I'd be curious to know what their stripes were. It's kind of horrific when you think about it, to have it easily assumed that Bush & co would just gin up an unnecessary war for no reason save short-term political gain, without at the least giving some credit for their belief in the threat, even if you do not agree.

And I think Bush has walked himself into that dilemma by the number of reasons he has offered for invading Iraq and the number of times the "facts" he offered turned out to be not true.

What "facts" have not turned out to be true? I agree the reasons given have shifted, but to me that is explained by political pressure and the fact that the true reason is a poltical 'own goal' if you speak it out loud -- we are trying to avoid Saddam's being able to deter us.

Bush has faults galore (he's certainly strikingly inarticulate) but total cynicism is not one of them imo. He is after all a believing Christian. I think this must be a symptom of the red/blue divide of the country. Polls do not reflect what your friends tell you in Bergen county.
