Debating what we (the US) should do in the Middle East is a topic area where intelligent people can and obviously do have widely divergent opinions -- in this area of discussion people should listen to one another with respect. What I find frustrating is the constant and intentional injection of confusion over the few things that we know with some certainty. We know for example that the US chose not to unilaterally invade Iraq and go after Saddam after the actions taken in the name of the UN were concluded. When people intentionally fill the conversation with gross distortions based on hubris rather than a desire to have an intelligent conversation, it prevents any meaningful discussion from taking place.

But it is a conversation worth having. There is a problem with global terrorism that must be dealt with. There is a problem with weapons proliferation that canot go unresolved for much longer. There is a problem along the lines of a "clash of civilizations" that must be addressed. And there is certainly an issue with the escalation of violence that seems to to be taking hold all over the world -- including in areas of the US once thought to be safe and isolated from the madness around us. The question is: "what should we do about these issues?" A barage of absurd statements about the few things we do not with some certainty is an invitation to kill any potential for an intelligent conversation of any of these related issues - and I suspect there are some people with an agenda to prevent these issues from being discussed in an intelligent manner.
