When it came to Asia, there was one domino theory...not twenty variations.

There were a million variations. Everyone who thought about it had their own idea about it.

"Also the Domino theory would not really have bee unproven totally invalid even if Laos and Cambodia didn't fall. Our intervention could have helped to avoid those countries falling to communism. In the end it failed but the Domino theory would only have been 100% proven wrong if we did almost nothing and no other country in the region besides South Vietnam fell to communism. "

Is this an example of "hope springs eternal"; otherwise, I do not understand the point of the above comments.

I don't understand the point of your comment.

My point was that the only way the domino theory would have been proven totally wrong was if we did nothing to stop the communists in SE Asia and no coutnry or at least no country other then South Vietnam feel to the communists. If we acted an no country fell then our actions might have prevented the dominos from falling. If countries did fall then they where dominos that fell.

The domino theory was the idea the coutnries would fall like dominos. In truth only two extra dominos fell but more could have fallen had we not acted and those two dominos that fell showed the theory was sound even if some people had wildly exagerated ideas as to how far it would go.
