I don't know if they break up or just peel off and drop to the ground. I believe they remain intact.

there is one thing that should be considered.....the .223 in a sabot will leave NO rifling markings....since the plastic is what engages the rifling.

This does not mean this can not be the round used as the investigators would simply conclude that they are dealing with a sabot round due to the absence of the markings.
