I am watching "Booknotes" on C-SPAN right now. Michael Mandelbaum is on, with his book "Ideas that Conquered the World." He is Yale, Cambridge, Harvard PHD. Here is a NYT review of it. A well done review that leaves me completely uninterested in reading the book. Patrick Tyler is supposed to be one of Howell Raines' rising stars. And he appears to have done a fine critical review of the book. But the combination of the summary of the argument and the review suggests one should spend one's time elsewhere.
