Some witness accounts have led investigators to explore whether the sniper has an accomplice, investigators say. And police who brief reporters usually are careful to refer to the killer or killers. During a news briefing this week, a Montgomery County, Md., police spokeswoman was quick to correct herself when she said, ''Assuming they are acting alone, and we do . . . .'' With a few exceptions, the most publicized U.S. serial murderers -- the Son of Sam, the Zodiac Killer, the Night Stalker -- have acted alone. But overall, roughly one in five serial killers have an accomplice, says James Alan Fox, a Northeastern University criminologist who tracks serial murders. Robert Ressler, a former FBI agent who pioneered the agency's profiling techniques, says the Washington-area sniper's ability to hit his victims with a single shot and escape suggests he has a ''wheel man,'' who may also act as a victim spotter. ''These are complex crimes,'' he says. ''You can't just pull up and shoot out the window unless you're an exceptional marksman. I think he's getting out of his seat and shooting with a scope and a bipod or a rest. Someone else is driving.'' Ressler said he suspects that by the time the victim falls, the vehicle is already moving. [snip]story.news.yahoo.com How long before your crack investigators see the light??
