the subject of whether or not those people in Guantanamo are POWs

Neither the Bush Administration, nor I, consider them to be POWs. You will notice that Europe and the Red Cross have basically shut up about it. I suggest that it might be better to "Agree to Disagree" on this point.

What is silly is to back and forth with Lawyers opinions, which the other side does not care about. The other thing that is silly is to use derogatory language, such as " so pathetic." We argue strongly here, but we find if we keep it civil, and are polite toward on another, the thread works.

You will notice as you read this thread that there are some strongly held opposed positions. In spite of that, we have been able to keep it going without it descending into "Your Another!" I enjoy having you state your opinions here, even though I am sure I will not agree with at least 98% of them. That is what keeps the thread interesting.

Re Guantanamo are POWs

I regard those guys as POW's. I think most nations would. The important point is ...Is it safe to release them??

The answer is probably no. They would resort to anti western behavior in many cases...even terrorism. The "POW's" can be released once the war on terrorism is over. That might be a while.

The Australians will be getting on board now. They have a good record on counter terrorism, and Xenophobia is a national pastime.

Zonder,

I could re-iterate a thousand times the arguments, but it boild down to this:

o they are prisoners of a war - yes
o do they meet the definition of POW (a formal issue)
as laid out by the signators of the Geneva Convention?

Our opinion (most of America and the Admin) - no
Your opinion (and your lawyer friend) - yes

The Red Cross is monitoring, so why don't we drop this subject.
