It's even worse than you think. There are hundreds of small companies (many started by ex IBMers) out there slowly but surely usurping IBM's service business. Their pitch is that they are MUCH less expensive, more responsive, etc. With equipment cost becoming dirt cheap, they are also installing duplicate gear (at no cost to the client) which will take over if any of the operating equipment drops out. Hard not to like this approach.

As you note, the service business is a tough place to make serious dough no matter how you cut it. Margins?..... what margins?
