I agree completely. Especially in the case of a producer with strong process and tools knowledge like Intel. I think the fabless model is a sign of weakness. Either financial or technical. It is a shortcut that allows new designs from startups to come to market quickly. But it does not signal the strength and commitment of owning facilities. But hey, the 1990's were a time of hit and run quick bucks. So dotcoms with no products. And chip companies with no fabs. Why not ?

But more seriously, I think the fabs in Taiwan, etc.... are just the expression of those folks wanting to be in the chip game, but not having any applications of their own. So they don't have any chip designs. They don't make any equipment. I guess they can offer cheap capital and low wages. And that is not what tech innovation is about.

Well, good luck to all. I'm sure I'll incur someone's wrath with these remarks. But what the hay........
