At the time the decision was made not to invade Iraq and not to go after Saddam, invading Iraq and deposing Saddam would have been a unilateral declaration of war by the US with no legal basis -- not an act of self-defense either for us or for Kuwait. You are profoundly misinformed and spreading misinformation on the basic facts.

Although there were numerous reasons why the U.S. did not march to Baghdad and topple Saddam during the Gulf War, certainly the position of the U.N was a very prominent reason. Although I cannot find my copy of Shwarzkopf's book "It Doesn't Take a Hero", I do have my copy of Colin Powell's 1996 autobiography titled "My American Journey" in front of me now on my desk. There is an entire chapter devoted to the Gulf War titled "Every War Must End". In this chapter, Powell refers to the internaional coalition and U.N. position time and time again. I quote from General Powell's 1996 autobiography: "But why didn't we push on to Baghdad once we had Saddam on the run? Why didn't we finish him off? Or, to put it another way, why didn't we move the goalposts? What tends to be forgotten is that while the United States led the way, we were heading an international coalition carrying out a clearly defined UN mission. That mission was accomplished."
