It would be nice if America's head of state could make a reciprocal gesture, to let the Australians know that he stands with them as they stood with him.

Good idea... And it is strange that the press hasn't covered the blast in Bali with more coverage.

What a brutal tragedy... My heart definitely goes out to the Aussies.

I believe it was done. I watched on CNN, Prez Bush making appropriate noises.

Strangely enough, many Aussies dont feel real hurt - this as reported by my sisters living in OZ.

cheers, kumar

Hi Nadine Carroll; Re: "They're spending it searching the morgues for their four bridesmaids two of Maria's sisters plus two friends. Imagine that: For as long as you live, your wedding anniversary will also be the anniversary of the murder of your family and friends."

Kind of ironic that Mark Steyn would choose to call attention to wedding parties that are devastated by violence. I wonder if he remembered what happened in Afghanistan recently. Accident or not, it's not a good idea to pick on civilians.

Oh, and I see from today's news that the right wingers now in power in Israel have finally halted the terror problem there. That was the final suicide bombing, wasn't it?

Nadine Carroll, April 12, 2002
As I'm sure you realise, this reasoning is bogus. The Israelis were under no illusion that suicide bombing would suddenly stop, especially if they were forced to pull out of cities so quickly. Like most maufacturing enterprises, suicide bombing has a pipeline, and the security forces knew that a good number of already 'manufactured' bombers had been dispersed and were ready to go.
...
We will have to see how it plays out. The costs in human destructrion, further radicalization, and terrible PR are obvious. It will take some time to see if any of the goals were achieved.

After the Bali bombing I sent a bunch of emails to bloggers and newspapers, offering my condolences and support. No responses as yet, I imagine they were probably overwhelmed by similar emails.

The print media is covering the events. I think it's unrealistic to expect TV reporters to cover it at this point - there's nothing new to report.

The investigation is very confusing. I keep reading conflicting reports about whether or not the bomb was ANFO, C-4 or what. The Indonesian investigators are out of their league.

Nadine, attacks in foreign places do not inspire terror like attacks at home. Thus we in the U.S. did not pay much attention to the attacks on the African embassies and our Navy destroyer in Aden, even though our own citizens were affected. It's easy to handle this mentally... "Note to self: stay away from Africa, Yemen, Bali, etc".

But if that awful Bali bombing had happened on the beach in Sydney, we here in the U.S. would pay a lot more attention because of what it would represent - an attack that could happen to us anytime in our own homes.

Most of the American TV media can hardly be bothered to cover the American President when he gives an address. That should speak volumes to the American people, and to the rest of the world as well.

Viewer participation on regularly scheduled programs continues to decline. Perhaps someday, the "major TV station yesterday's hotshots" will finally understand their customers. Too late.

By the time they "get it"....Internet and cable news and message boards like this will have taken over completely.

And I agree....we should all call or email the majors and tell them what we think about their lack of coverage of the Bali bombing, and how Australians are coping with their loss.
