Physical Gas Market Buoyed by Significant Winter Storm
Dec. 5 (BTU's Daily Gas Wire) -
A major winter storm blasted the majority of the northeast section of the country lending strong support to spot gas prices, said market players. The major band of snow fell in a south to northward pattern from Washington D.C. to Philadelphia and blanketed the region, said The Weather Channel. Chief consuming regions saw spot prices enhanced an average of just over a dime as the storm injected the market, although, one trader remarked, "spot prices didn't go crazy."

In the Northeast, Algonquin Gas Transmission continued to restrict its Authorized Overrun, Interruptible Transport and secondary firm nominations for today at it's New York Southeast compressor station. Otherwise, northeastern spot gas prices were stimulated by near term demand as regional power loads are also anticipated to increase, said sources. Transco Zone 6 New York saw deals at $6.00 to $6.30 picking up a quarter, while Tetco M3 ranged at $5.20 to $5.62, up only marginally by a penny.

In the Gulf Coast, early deals at the benchmark Henry Hub were seen in the mid $4.30s, but trimmed gains later in the day to around the $4.20s, said traders. Overall, the Louisiana point improved 11 cents with deals done at $4.26 to $4.39. At other area points, Transco Station 65 saw deals executed at $4.32 to $4.39 an increase of 12 cents.

A winter blast also hit most of the Midcontinent although, temperatures are expected to climb into the 40s by Friday, said TWC. According to some traders, power loads are expected to remain steady through tomorrow. However, spot gas prices were improved an average of 7 cents as deals at the Chicago City-Gate were spread $4.26 to $4.33. Northern Demarcation was transacted at $4.17 to $4.22.

In West Texas, "weather in the region is pretty chilly," said one local trader. The onset of brisk temperatures injected spot and Waha hub transacted in a relatively tight range of $4.10 to $4.15, gaining 13 cents. Likewise, Keystone climbed a dime with trades done at $4.02 to $4.07.

Spot prices in the Rockies were mostly on the rise today. Opal picked up 7 cents as the point traded at $3.20 to $3.31. Questar gained 3 cents with common trades around $3.24 to $3.25. Stanfield fell back 4 cents as deals were transacted at $3.86 to $3.91.

Canadian points saw mixed gains today as Sumas dropped a couple of cents to range at $3.85 to $3.90 while AECO rose by 8 cents with deals traded at C$5.38 to C$5.45.
