TSMC's third quarter net profit triples but below forecasts

The world's biggest contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) said its third quarter net profit nearly tripled, but still came in lower than forecasts.

The company said Tuesday its net profit for the three months to September was 3.16 billion Taiwan dollars (90.54 million US) compared with 1.24 billion dollars for the same period last year.

But the figure was sharply lower than the previous quarter, when TSMC posted a net profit of 9.31 billion dollars, reflecting a fall in capacity utilisation and average selling price.

Analysts had estimated the company's third quarter net profit would range from 6.3 billion dollars to 7.5 billion dollars.

TSMC said it sees sales bottoming out in the next two quarters.

Its third quarter capacity utilisation ratio fell to 79 percent from 85 percent and the average selling price was lower than in the second quarter, a company statement said.

The capacity utilisation ratio beat a low-70s range guidance given by chairman Morris Chang at a briefing in July. The company expected a fall of 5.0 percent in the average selling price.

Wafer shipments fell to 677,000 eight-inch equivalent wafers from 719,000 wafers. Guidance was for a low single-digit decline.
