I read a lot of Dune, but found it too tedious to continue. The story is interesting enough, it is the execution that is flawed. It is rather like Atlas Shrugged: interesting plot idea (get all of the productive people to go on strike, as it were), but the novel, as literature, sucks. Roger Zelazney has a good sense of characterization, plot development, pacing, prose style, and other elements of good fiction writing, and is much better than either Herbert or Rand. I recommend Lord of Light.

I mentioned that you would have done better to have referred to Nietzsche. That was the extent of the contrast. As for Nietzsche's philosophical status, it is not worth arguing about in this forum. Suffice it to say that for most educated people he has more credibility than Herbert......
