The note at the end about Pauling probably missing the discovery is well known; he was the foremost expert in stereochemistry, having originated the systematic application of quantum mechanics to the study of the chemical bond (the last edition of his book The Nature of the Chemical Bond is still in print) and it's nearly certain he'd have deduced the structure had he gotten a hint on the missed trip to London. But life is made up of close calls like that...
