I handled a case for an American who was hired by a Saudi company to help them set up a warehouse. He brought along a Pakistani who spoke Arabic to help him. They had to live in a compound for foreigners - when they got there their living quarters had no furniture, no bedding, no towels, no food, no way to get anything because they could not go to the market.

I won't go into details about the work experience except to say that they got shafted (naturally) but fortunately for my client it happened while he was on a trip to the US. The company refused to give the Pakistani his passport back until he signed a declaration that they had done nothing wrong and he had not been mistreated. They kept him incommunicado but he persuaded the manager to call my client, who threatened to call the US Embassy, so finally they let him leave.

The Saudis had Philippinos building the warehouse who were not paid, did not get enough to eat, and the Saudis beat them.

If you ever do business with Saudis, get your money up front.

Edit: I handled a divorce for a Saudi man who was a perfect gentleman. But when you are in Saudi Arabia, they certainly had a lot of leverage that you don't have.

I wonder how many Americans can relate back to their time spent living in Saudi Arabia with as much fondness as these Saudis.

Depends if they were in the Aramco complex or not.
