Karen... I have to believe from your words that you've never traveled or lived amongst people in some of these poverty stricken countries.. I'm talking about places where the only potable water is that which falls from the clouds and is stored in cisterns. Where there are no dumpsters to "dive into" since garbage is buried whereever a hole can be dug (and usually uncovered years later by some poor kid cutting their bare feet on broken glass or sharp metal... Where the only facilities are outhouses dug in the backyard, and what they eat is what they are lucky enough to find or grow... Karen... the poverty in this country is VASTLY different than that found around the globe.. Here people have a choice about "opting out" of society.. And the rest are generally so mentally disturbed that not even their families want to accept responsibility for taking care of them... Yes.. it's tragic and we've grown desensitized to the poor amongst us in this nation, but opportunities are available to those who seek, or are capable, to take advantage of them... Because we have a system that does offer welfare and poverty support to those who seek it. But you go to other countries and there are areas where the governments could care less about the prosperity of various regions of their country.. Places that are forgotten because no one has a vested interest, or desire to divert money, to make their lives better... I've been in some really crappy places Karen... beautiful people eaking out a miserable living in the midst of poverty.. And even so, there are places that are far worse than anything I have experienced, such as Sudan and Ethiopia... The destitue people living outside the US are living in FAR different circumstances than those poor folks living here in the US, Canada, or Europe... Here, people have hope if they are only willing to reach out for it and accept it... But over there, in the undeveloped, authoritarian world, the only hope they have is to seize power from those who hold it, diverting the limited resources to themselves, over anyone else.. Might be time for you to do a bit of traveling... But this time, stay out of the resorts and go out (if you dare) into the villages and rural areas.. Hawk
