Right or wrong isn't really that relevant. The Court has the sole authority to interpret the Constitution. The Court may overturn it's own decision or there might be an amendment to the Constitution that results in a new interpretation.

The court has the authority and power to impose its opinion of the constitution. That does not make its opinion is correct. When its opinion is wrong the result allows for or even requires unconstitutional actions.

I had thought that we were
supposed to follow the rule of law.


Exactly, the constitution is the law.
