Actually, used as a noun, scut is a short tail, as on a deer. Maybe they think they're turning tail and running, showing scut.

Scutwork you probably know as a term. That's its use as an adjective.

I think it's like "schmutz", which is a far better word, as many Yiddishisms are. :-)
