(1) getting a new notebook... probably the new Compaq EVO N800W (a portable workstation from their business division) with 2.2 mobile Pentium 4 cpu and 1 gig of DDR 2100 ram ... because it is relatively light, has the new ATI Radeon 9000 chip I need for looking at small variables in x-rays, etc.. Just not sure whether to go with WIN 2000 Pro or WIN XP Pro (using WIN 2000 Pro on my home and office boxes) and should I stay with NTFS file format rather than FAT? (2) Talking about utilities: My system is 2.2 Gig Pentium 4 with 1024 Gigs of RDram using a hardware (Adaptec dual channel) raid adapter and running 4 SCSI harddrives in a Raid 5 array. Presently using WIN 2000 Pro with NTFS file format. Also has a separate removable IDE harddrive larger than the combined RAID array to allow for cloning the raid array and a DAT (DDS4) tape backup. (a) End-It-All: Will it work with WIN 2000 Pro and/or WIN XP Pro (thinking of converting from 2000 to XP) with NTFS file format on my system? (b) Registry Cleaners: Are there any safe ones that can be used on my system? I e-mailed "System Mechanic" and they advised me all is safe except possibly not deleting duplicate files which they say can be excluded in their registry scan. Any suggestions? (c) Optimizers: Two come to mind... DisKeeper and O&O Defrager. The O&O has had great write-ups. Anyone have any experience with defragers with NTFS file system? (d) AdAware vs. Pest Patrol: Have heard that AdAware is spyware itself and that Pest Patrol does a more thorough job and is safe to use. Anyone with any experience? (e) Firewalls: Was going to use ZoneAlarm, but checking out the Pro version and free version I read that it was difficult to uninstall. Someone suggested Sygate Personal firewall or Sygate Pro. Any opinions? (f) Disaster Recovery Software: Anyone now of one that will work with a hardware Raid Array using NTFS format? Stomp BackupMyPC (the former Veritas Backup Exec) says it won't do a disaster recovery with a RAID array or with NTFS format. Sorry again for the long post, but I'm looking for help. Decision making is the hard part. It's better, IMO, to research it first rather than try and bail out of problems later. I realize there are a lot of questions, but I hope the thread can help with answering them. Many thanks in advance to any and all who wish to jump in and relate their experiences with the above questions. I have a feeling there are many on this great thread who have the same questions. Best to all, Marty
