It still honestly amazes me that so many people believe that stringent gun laws reduce crime.

I understand that in Britain, where citizens can not own guns privately, there have been recent dramatic increases in violent gun crimes with a rising murder rate. Criminals who want guns simply get them through the black market.

I also understand that 'house breaking' in Britain is on the rise, i.e. the armed intrusion into people's houses even though they are still home. Well, why not? The criminals in England certainly don't have to worry about the average home owner being armed. Interestingly, this particular kind of crime is rare in the U.S.
