I have always considered this a "Suspect" stat, John. It does show how much the middle has moved up, and what has happened to the overall increase in wealth. The "Bottom vs the Top" number is fallacious for this reason, IMO.


Well, argue away but you will be arguing with everyone if you are arguing about US data; and almost everyone if you are arguing about international data. The argument is not about widening disparaties but about why they occured and what should be done about it. Krugman's piece in Sunday's New York Times Magazine represents one pole in the US debate; I'm certain one could easily find an opposite pole somewhere else, perhaps the recent editorial pages of the WSJ.
