Moreira Star Publications Malaysia October 25, 2002 Multimedia messaging services (MMS) and location-based services are to be the next big mobile data applications on mobile phones, Nokia (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd managing director, Hannu Karavirta told reporters last week. According to studies done by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Gartner Group, revenue from data will comprise 32% of all average revenue per user (ARPU) by 2006 from a total global mobile communications revenue worth 720bil euro (RM2.7 trillion). Revenue from mobile data applications, services and content is expected to comprise 12% of ARPU. In 2001, data revenue comprised a mere 7% of total revenues worth 370bil euro (RM1.38 trillion). The mobile communications market has been growing at a compound annual growth rate of 14%. “Nokia wants to drive this future, so we are coming out with camera phones and so on,” said Karavirta. “About half of Nokia’s phones are MMS-enabled this year and most of our phones will be MMS-enabled next year. All this won’t fly without applications which is why Nokia is welcoming new members to join Forum Nokia, our global applications developer community,” he added. Developers can download developer tools for trial from the forum’s website at www.forum.nokia.com and they can later contact Nokia to become formal members of the forum. So far, Forum Nokia has 800,000 registered members worldwide and 50 local members including companies and individuals. The companies that have registered as members typically have an average of 30 staff each. Forum Nokia’s members are entitled to download Nokia’s development tools free from the forum’s website. In addition, Nokia will provide them with advice and expertise on which applications are in demand and which to develop. After the development process, Nokia will test the application at its Mobile Internet Centre in Cyberjaya. If the application passes all tests, it will be awarded the Nokia OK status. The approved application will then be made available at Nokia’s global online libraries at www.softwaremarket.nokia.com and www.tradepoint.nokia.com . Softwaremarket is a consumer portal which lets Nokia phone owners buy and download applications online. Tradepoint is a business-to-business (B2B) portal which lets businesses trade products and content. Transactions at the Softwaremarket and Tradepoint sites are entirely between the buyers and vendors. “We believe that applications drive sales of mobile phones and mobile communications equipment and we will benefit indirectly from sales of these applications,” said Karavirta. << - Eric -
