"Retreat" is not the same as "surrender", unless you're convinced that the US "surrendered" in Vietnam.

And where exactly are we supposed to "retreat" to?? Northern Idaho??

Bilow... there isn't anywhere to hide.. 9/11 proved that...

We're dealing with powers, some very wealthy and with state assets at their disposal, bent upon destroying us...

So the US can't afford the luxury of "retreating" because they're going to advance right into that power vacuum we leave behind.

And the last thing we can do is show fear or cowardice in the face of Islamic militantism. Islamic militants, or just the Arab culture at large, lives by a different moral code than the West. They don't peceive a value like "weakness is strength"..

But they will accept our values if they are perceived as stronger than the alternatives being offered by the West.

And you know something... I'm not ashamed of our values. I think they are worth fighting for, and worth spreading...

Especially when the alternative is "martyrdom" and hatred against anything that smells like democratic values or secularism.
