If by worthless you mean it's not providing tradeable information, I agree with you. It is not worthless in showing that the 1/40 ratio generally prevails, and that significant deviations from that ratio tend to be manifest only at the opening prices, where all that QQQ activity before and after NDX is open has its effect.

The chart was posted as an answer to a question, and was not intended to do anything more

The chart shows how QQQ and NDX track on a daily basis, and at least to me shows NO noticeable pattern other than the strong tendency to decay from the opening excursions toward the nominal ratio, or more precisely to some long term average value close to the nominal ratio that might be somewhat displaced because of those minute effects you mention.

I expect that an intraday chart would show the decay toward the average closing value happens very quickly and then remains there throughout the day. Perhaps some Stockcharts member could post an intraday chart spanning a few days.
