The other 20 or so firms I have compiled for the September quarter did 3.6moz versus 3.3moz in June quarter versus 3.0moz in March quarter. Looks like very impressive gains, but I will wait to see at least 50 firms reporting before I jump to an overall industry conclusion. Gold production certainly is not plummeting.

P.S. More than half of Barrick's drop was "Other/Mines closing in 2002" 77,884 vs. 160,158, which should not have been surprise. The real surprise (IMHO) was Meikle: 150,032 vs. 206,941 It would make me have some questions about underground ore grades in the Northern Carlin trend, their impact on other adjacent mines, and development of other mines (like Great Basin's Ivanhoe)
