Agere, Ericsson, Proxim Partner for Public Wi-Fi Push Online staff -- 10/24/2002 Electronic News e-insite.net Ericsson today announced it has teamed with Agere Systems Inc. and Proxim Corp. to jointly develop and supply telecoms with technologies for WLAN access, integrating indoor and public Wi-Fi spot access with mobile 2G and 3G networks. The plan calls for Agere to supply 802.11b modules, software and subscriber identity module (SIM) technology to Ericsson, which will tailor products for both fixed line and mobile operators, based on open standards. Ericsson also will pitch in IETF/3GPP compliant authentication servers, while Proxicom contributes 802.11 compliant access points for 2GHz, 4GHz and 5GHz bands. "The [telecom] operators can offer customers attractive value-added service packages, combining the different features of both WLAN and mobile technologies, also creating new revenue streams from locally adapted content," said Torbjörn Nilsson, Ericsson's senior VP of marketing and strategic business development, in a statement. "And since the solutions are based on standard mobile phone SIM-card technology, using public WLAN will be as easy to use as a mobile phone." This partnership is the second public WLAN push made this week. Intel Corp. Monday announced plans to stimulate the growth of 802.11 technology by sinking $150 million into related technologies that aid in growing Wi-Fi infrastructure. That news came on the cusp of Intel's launch of its first mobile-specific processor, code-named Banias, slated for the first half of next year.
