from a user's pov, cable is asymmetrical, but less so than typical dsl service packages of 64-96k up, 256-512k down.

most of cable's asymmetricality comes not from artificial limits but because bandwidth is shared by all users in a node. this also means DSL speeds are somewhat constant whereas cable varies widely depending on if the guy next door is exchanging web porn on kazaa.
