On the barrel of an AR-15 it usually says 5.56 NATO not .223.

Besides the .223 and the .308 are for different purposes and NATO needs both.

There is M-193, which is 5.56 ball ammo and weighs 3.56 gm (56 grn), designated by US Military. The Nato round is designated SS-109 and is slightly heavier at 3.95 gm (62 grn), streamlined and armor piercing due to jacketing.
