If he lived a life of non-violence, poverty, and non-religion, then he would not be a hypocrite. As it was, it seemed as though he considered himself enlightened, and thus not subject to the rules and values that he espoused. Not unlike Soviet Communist Leaders who afforded themselves grand luxuries, while ascribing crumbs tot he poor proletariat.

Nothing worse that a rich self-centered bleeding heart crying about everybody else being materialistic. Reminds me of the power crisis in CA when Streisand and other well known Hollywood bleeding hearts were imploring us to curb our use of energy. Never mind that her grand estate uses more energy and water than many small CA towns.

The real issue is that he assumed that if we could eliminate materialism, and religion, they "the world will live as one." Poor guy put to much faith in human ability. Humanist as he was, he could not consider the human condition as a problem (for the humanist, this possibility has no solution), and thus could only look externally.

I personally don't consider Lennon to be much of a thinker. Otherwise, he would have realized the dead-end to his philosophical rambling. Likewise, had he thought on it, his own hypocrisy would have drive him mad. Perhaps it already had.
