The last time I made home made ice cream was probably 30 years ago. I had friends in Maryland who had a hand crank ice cream maker. It was arduous work, and made only about two cups of not very hard ice cream which was not as good as Breyer's. Sometimes nostalgia isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I understand they have electric crank machines these days, but why?

I have an ice cream maker and make ice creams, gelatos and sorbets regularly. It's great fun, and easy with the advent of electric ice cream makers.
