The End of Ragingbull?->Web Portal Terra Lycos Lays Off 174

.c The Associated Press

WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) - Internet portal Terra Lycos has laid off 174 U.S. employees, or 21 percent of its American staff, in moves that reflect continuing challenges for Web companies.

Of the 174 job cuts, 112 hit the company's U.S. headquarters in Waltham.

Jennifer Risi, a spokeswoman for the Barcelona, Spain-based company, said Wednesday the reductions are the result of efficiencies created by the October 2000 merger of Lycos with Spain's Terra Networks.

Terra Lycos ranks as the sixth most popular U.S. Internet destination, behind MSN, AOL, Yahoo, Google and eBay, according to Internet audience measurement service Neilsen/Net Ratings.

But the company said the layoffs would be accompanied by a paring down of some content areas to focus on services like its search engine, Lycos Finance, Matchmaker.com and music.

``This reorganization is about focusing on our most valuable properties,'' Risi said.
