AJ, Most experienced bidders will check put an ecrow site for flack, bad comments etc. newbies are led like lambs to the slaughter.
Possibly an ebay escrow site, like paypal, would work. The big problem is high value items attract complex detailed scams where all the details look OK.

People steal from where the money is, not from $100 transactions.
