GST, I don't know what time CBS' "Sunday Morning" news show comes on in the middle of the Pacific, but you might want to tune in. There's an op-ed piece on the Iraq situation. Here's a quick synopsis:

* The whole of the population of the middle east, not to mention a great many people in the US and the rest of the world, is convinced that the US WILL invade Iraq - that it has already been decided and is inevitable.

* They'd be wrong - war is not inevitable. But convincing everyone that it is inevitable was a "brilliant ploy" by Bush to get what he really wants - a harmless Saddam Hussein.

* The UN "will" very soon pass a new, tougher resolution on Iraq, inspection teams are "sleeping in airport hotels" waiting to start their work, and Saddam has not only said he would cooperate fully, but has now conceded access to presidential sites that were previously off limits. No doubt he will eventually start playing games with the inspectors again, but it will be impossible for him to hide much and his ability to threaten us or our friends will be pretty thoroughly dismantled.

* So, there will be no war. Bush will accomplish what fairly recently seemed an impossible objective - disarming Saddam - and he will have done it by convincing everyone that war was inevitable, that he meant to invade Iraq regardless.

Any of this sounding familiar, GST?
