I call it "studying oneself into stupidity." It does happen. The trouble is, I don't know how to avoid it.

Well, there's always the Confucian maxim, except that Confucius was so uninterested in material wealth that it hardly ought to apply: "Thinking without learning is dangerous; learning without thinking is useless."

Maybe Darwin's maxim is more helpful, to the effect that "any time I hear something that I totally disagree with or that seems to challenge my most firm beliefs, I find it best to pay very close attention to the argument."
