They have no choice but to try and compete with NXTL. Don't bet on them being successful due to latency problems and NXTL's multi-year lead which has allowed them to link multiple businesses together with DC. Unlike changes commodity cell phone service, many NXTL users can't opt out of NXTL because of their interconnectedness with suppliers, customers and their own employees.

Slacker, thanks for the updates on PTT from Alltel and Verizon, keep them coming. I think it's important to monitor the competition, but I also agree with Arnie. Nextel has a headlock on the corporate PTT market with a strong base of existing customers which in all likelyhood would lose PTT connectivety by switching to another carrier. I don't forsee Nextel allowing the competition integration with Direct Connect any time soon, if ever.

My guess is the competition has their eyes set on the consumer market, which for the most part is wide open. However, if the Boost Mobile California/Nevada trial goes well, which I think it will, look for a major push for nationwide PTT in the consumer market. A successful nationwide consumer rollout of Direct Connect should scare the bejeezus out of the competition, which is why they are all looking at some form of PTT, IMO.

Voice is still king, and Nextel holds the crown jewels.
