Top Shiite cleric in Lebanon likens Bush to Hitler

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Lebanon's top Shiite Muslim cleric on Friday likened US President George W. Bush to Adolf Hitler.

"America has reached a hysterically aggressive stage ... it specifies the locations of terror and the battles for freedom according to its vital interests in the world," Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah said in a weekly sermon in south Beirut.

He urged the "oppressed peoples" to confront "this new aggressive development in which the superpower is turning into something like a new Nazi, in the form of a Hitler with an American citizenship."

Fadlallah also accused the United States of "giving the green light to Israel to employ Nazi practices against the
Palestinians."

Fadlallah, 67, is a senior Shiite religious authority and a harsh critic of US policies in the Middle East, region where many Arabs view America as being biased toward Israel in its conflict with the Palestinians.

He has said previously that a US attack on Iraq was designed to assert America's control of oil in the Middle East.

On Aug. 12, Fadlallah issued a fatwa, or religious edict, banning Muslims from assisting the United States and its allies in an attack against Iraq.
