This is a fantastic time to be alive, Maurice. The Net forces us to come to terms with each other: makes it harder to keep a secret, harder to get away (for very long) with crookery, and easier to see the other person's point of view.

We'll soon see what we're really made of. Like you, I'm optimistic about what we can do as long as we aren't first knocked out a NEO, a Cumbre Vieja, a giant caldera (Yosemite), or anything else from the endless catalog of Possible Natural Catastrophes -- or by the nightmare designs of diseased lunatics.

Actually, though, the Net is here now; the Next Big Thing is Nanotech -- if all goes well, that is.
