"maybe the problem is that you are looking at generalities, and I am talking specifics"

Some truth there in that there are stocks and sectors that can do well from here on while I expect the market as a whole to continue downward in the long term.

I think to say techs on general will buck the bear market from this point forward is optimistic. Software companies may be selling at low valuations compared to where they were in the past few years. If barriers to entry for this biz are low, especially as the replacement cycle that accompanies all new industries (i am referring to the PC industry here) slows down, then why should these companies have a high, or even an average valuation?

What is the cost in setting up as a competitor to PSFT? Tech salaries are low and there are plenty of very large tech companies with tons of cash in the bank and many underutilised employees.

Not to mention the fact that a good proportion of the client base is happily set up with systems that will see them thru the next few years anyway.
