David, a mortgage is unlike a margin loan. With a margin loan your stocks get sold if you are underwater. With a mortgage you can sit out a down market as long as you make the payments.

It's easier to sell stocks before getting to that point and if you buy the residence you live in sometimes people have to move....

Spekulatius, you have succinctly hit on the point many people here seem to miss when they foretell doom for housing. It's a long-term thing, ya know? Not a trading stock, which you unload at the first sign of trouble.
