Something very interesting that was mentioned in the talk was the connection that the colonists made between native Americans and Satan A war between the Indians and colonists was raging at the time of the trials and many of the accusers were evacuees who had been forced to leave their homes and go work as servants in Essex County. Many of the men who were accused of witchcraft traded with Indians. The author says that one reason she thinks the whole thing got out of hand was that the colonists made a connection between the Indians attacking in the material world, and Satan attacking in the spirit realm. Satan was perceived to be "on the Indian's side". After all it had been Satan's country until the Christians arrived (according to the Christians, of course). It was a very interesting thesis. Much more to it, of course, and this author did extensive research into original documents.
