It was VERY loud, which means there were either flying low, or very fast for that much energy to be transferred through the atmosphere....

Ahem........ The volume of sound is determined by three items

1) the distance from the source
2) the density of the transmitting medium
3) the amplitude of vibration.

Not bad eh?....45 years since grade 10 or 11.

I remember right after 9/11 I was listening to WLS out of Chicago when a passenger started acting hinky and the F16s were sent as an escort. They kept announcing that no bomb had gone off, that was the F16s breaking your windows as they intercepted the airliner.
