"Guam is Good, By Order of the Base Commander!" That sign used to hang at the MAC terminal on Anderson AFB, up near Terragi Point part of the island.

Your father wouldn't recognize it today. Guam is so different. Its like a little taste of America. It draws 1 - 1.5 million Japanese tourists a year. Golf, snorkeling, gun shooting, gambling, malls, eating American style food, etc. Tourism is their mainstay, followed by US Government base support. The water is warm and clear, you can snorkel for 8 hours and never become cold. The sunsets are sensational, every night.

I married a Guamanian gal born and raised in Santa Monica, CA. I like Guam. Been there many times. Got married on the beach at Tumon. We had a mere 750 people to our wedding, I knew 6 of them. Seemed like half the island turned out. The family catered a four pig feast, and scads of big fresh fish. Everybody was fed in an hour. We cooked something like 50 chickens the day before to feed all the family workers who gathered to throw that shindig together. Jungle flowers adorned everywhere in the yard that day. One Uncle gave a 5 gallon gift of Mai Tai's. He used to be a bartender at Don Ho's bar in Waikiki. We had professional entertainment lined up till the wee hours of the morning. Island people know how to party.

Every July 21st, the island shuts down and celebrates Liberation Day. I was there for the 50th. The Marine Commandant flew in especially to participate. A whole bunch of jar heads came back for the first time in 50 years, and were booked into five star Japanese owned hotels on the beaches they had to win by force 50 years earlier. A very emotional event for a whole lot of folks. The Guamanians are Americans, and love America and what America did for their island and people. But they want to change their status. They are tired of being part of the last colonial empire in the world. Unfortunately the DoD and BLM which oversees their island work to a different agenda.
