They had an unprecedented dilemma of having to free so many people when faced by so many terrorists. Any hold-up could have meant one of the suicide bombers taking the whole building down.''

``By neutralizing everyone in there, the Russians took the only alternative to surrender. It behooves everyone in counter-terrorism to learn a lesson from these tactics,''

I hope we never face this, but I am afraid we will. Would our forces have the guts to make this decision?

Someone posted this to a newsgroup...

At last, we have an answer to the question "Why can't they just pump
sleeping gas into the room?" that comes up whenever bad guys hold
hostages. It's still not clear what kind of gas was used - some are
calling it "nerve gas" - but as I write this, CNN reports that 117 of
the 118 dead hostages died of gas poisoning. From what little I know of
anesthesiology, it seems that this is a very tricky business. If you
give the patient too little, he'll become somewhat agitated and violent.
If you give him too much, he'll become somewhat dead. And this is under
ideal hospital conditions with lots of monitoring equipment. If you just
pump it into a large theatre, proper dosing becomes even more difficult.
The Russians have taken this question beyond the realm of the theoretical.
