Louder than words

George W. Bush, who refuses to answer questions about his own drug use,
slashed drug rehabilitation programs for inmates while ushering in tougher
sentencing laws.

BY ROBERT BRYCE

" Once upon a time -- seven, 15 or 25 years ago -- Texas Gov. George W.
Bush was "young and irresponsible." But as governor, Bush has had little
sympathy for Texans who commit youthful indiscretions. He has tightened the
state's drug-sentencing laws, OK'd the housing of 16-year-olds in adult
correctional facilities and slashed funding for inmate substance-abuse
programs."

The only people Bush empathizes with are people who contribute to his campaign or give him gifts.
Saudi Prince contributed to his father's library. A few months back I noticed a well-to-do man from
the Arab world gave W's twin daughters coral bracelets. The gifts were valued at approximately $700 each,
I believe. The list was published in the NYTimes. I do not recall the status of the person who gave
the Bush daughters the bracelets. He might have been a Prince or he might have been
a rich businessman. Or both.

I corresponded with the Texas nurse in the winter and spring of 1997. I should have copied her posts. She
was the head nurse on her shift. When I told you the guards wore orange suits, I should have said the
suits were rubber. The guards and the nurse thought it was funny when they hosed down the
mentally ill prisoners and then put them in a cold cell where they sat naked and shivered for 24 hours.

As I recall, the prison system wasn't interested in spending money on medication that might have prevented
the inmates unpredictable behavior.

I hope Tom DeLay loses.
