(Nasdaq:RBAK - News), a leading provider of next-generation networking equipment purpose-built for the edge of the network, today introduced the SMS(TM) 10000 SL, an enhancement of the SMS 10000 platform. The enhancements are built upon Redback's industry-leading subscriber management technology with a redesign of the forwarding plane architecture, and a new version of Redback's AOS(TM) operating software. The SMS 10000 SL was engineered keeping in mind customer requirements to further enhance service offerings beyond broadband connectivity and deliver high-margin, bandwidth intensive consumer services. "Service providers are now layering premium services over basic Internet connectivity, and partnering with content-providers to offer subscribers high bandwidth services such as on-line gaming, pay-per-view video, video-conferencing and distance-learning," said Mark Bieberich, senior analyst at The Yankee Group. "Redback's SMS 10000 SL provides a combination of software features and high packet processing power that will ease service providers' ability to meet these bandwidth and application needs." "We deployed Redback's SMS 10000 platform last year for its rich AOS feature set, the high number of supported VPNs and simultaneous subscribers, especially the platform's industry-leading subscriber configuration and authentication capabilities designed to ease user-management," said Renaud Tilmans, Network Services Director at Belgacom. "Enhancements to the SMS 10000 platform that we're currently testing and plan to deploy will enhance our ability to expand our existing infrastructure and cope with our large customer growth." Designed to Protect Customers' Infrastructure Investment The SMS 10000 SL includes enhancements to accommodate and manage large-scale subscriber growth without requiring forklift upgrades. Subsystems like the connection managers and I/O modules allow for in place system upgrades. Upgrades can be done while retaining the current SMS 10000 chassis, switch fabric, management and timing modules, protecting service providers' existing investment. The SMS 10000 SL architecture is designed such that service providers can mix and match current and new connection managers and I/O cards allowing for a "pay as you grow" approach to meeting the demand for new services. New Forwarding Plane Architecture Enhances Performance The SMS 10000 platform today supports some of the largest and most demanding production broadband network environments in the world. The SMS 10000 SL with its new forwarding plane architecture offers additional high performance for implementing various broadband applications. The high scalability of the platform allows as many as 12 new connection managers (XCMs) in one SMS 10000 chassis, maximizing subscriber density. The XCMs work in conjunction with a new set of I/O interface cards including Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) and ATM OC-12. Central to the new architecture for the new connection managers is a state-of-the-art programmable network processor designed specifically for data networking. The processor runs at high speeds with large memory, providing higher throughput per subscriber, further enabling service providers to deliver content-rich multi-media applications. AOS 6.0 Optimized for IP Service Delivery AOS 6.0 includes software upgrades to take advantage of the new forwarding path architecture for higher performance, and includes automatic protection switching for enhanced reliability. New traffic prioritization and other software features allow bandwidth guarantees and premium service delivery on a per subscriber basis. Availability The SMS 10000 SL with the new features and functionality that are a part of AOS 6.0 will begin shipping in November 2002 and will be generally available in late Q4'02.
