Certainly, a preoccupation with vainglory is not worth one's time. (I get an image of Gloria Swanson at the end of Sunset Boulevard, slinking towards the camera). But the ability to be affected by external perspectives is not a bad thing. None of us are truly self- sufficient, and we delude ourselves by acting as if we are. As George Costanza said:"We're trying to have a civilization here!", and therefore we must pay attention to our interaction with others. More than that, though, other's offer us some enlargement of perspective, although not all are equally promising.....
