Re: If you mean that it was a war crime, because civilians were explictly targeted, then yes, as in fact that was the case

Correct. That is exactly what I meant.

zonder, as follow up to my last post, see the statistics:

holocaust-history.org

Hiroshima - deaths - 138,890
Nagasaki - deaths - 48,857

You have to add a few thousand more who died in subsequent years (to this day, sadly) due to effects of radiation.

Now take a look at the conventional deaths;

Tokyo bombings:
"On May 24, more than four hundred American bombers dropped 3,646 tons of bombs on central Tokyo, and on the industrial areas in the south of the city. More than a thousand Japanese were killed."5

Tokyo, March 1945: "83,793 Japanese civilians killed. That was the official minimum death toll; later, 130,000 deaths were 'confirmed' by the Japanese authorities." 5

Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe, Yokohama, Kawasaki March-May 1945:
"more than a quarter of a million"5

Total death of Japanese civilians in WWII: 2 million. Of that, less than 200,000 is directly attributable to the atomic bombs. At least 7 million were projected dead if Japan were to be invaded conventionally - NOW TELL ME, WHAT WAS HUMANE TO DO? HAVE 7 million die, or the 200,000? Case closed.
